Edgar Allan Poe’s Snifter of Blood #3 Review: Fun

One of the last things people will call Edgar Allan Poe and his works is “funny.” There’s not much to laugh at with Poe unless you replace the characters with characters from “The Simpsons.” Of course, “Ahoy Comics” trudges on with making Poe funny with their third installment “Edgar Allan Poe’s Snifter of Blood.”

The first story, “The Mystery of Marie Roget” by Rachel Pollack with artists Alan Robinson and Lee Loughridge, is supposed to be about Poe telling the audience the short story of the same name, but comes off more as Poe ranting about how much he hates Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle’s “Sherlock Holmes” stories. It’s hilarious seeing a writer who’s been dead for almost two centuries rant about a fellow mystery writer. The artwork does a fine job of going between serious mystery to comedy. “The Cask of Amontillado-Remastered” by Shaun Manning with artists Greg Scott and Andy Troy sees Poe’s distant descendant Poenulus Edgarallan tries and fails to save his ancestor’s works.

So he decides to create new ones starting with “The Cask of Amontillado.” It’s nothing like the original story, but what happens to Poenulus is clever. The direction the artwork tried to go for was “since this is a dark future let’s make everything dark.” While it’s true that this is a dark future the overall context of the story is a bit silly.

“Winfield” by Tyrone Finch is the first of two (very) short stories in this volume. It’s about a fast food restaurant owner who hires a mysterious person named Winfield who is apparently so perfect at his job that the food he makes comes out so good that business skyrockets. It’s an Ok story. It’s a fine short, just don’t expect much from it.

“Meat the Parents” by Brendan Mallory is about a dad telling his son the story of how his parents got him since he looks nothing like them. What follows is a messed up story about where the son came from. If you’re looking for a wild story that will make you say “WTF?” this is for you.

The staff at “Ahoy Comics” has upped their game with “Edgar Allan Poe’s Snifter of Blood #3.” The humor, artwork and the quality of the stories save for one is much higher than previous issues. If there is one issue that’ll create new fans of this comic, this issue is it.
