Review Fix Exclusive: Alyssa Joseph Talks ‘Sadboy’ And More

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Alyssa Joseph, who discusses her new single, “Sadly” and her goals for 2021.

Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?

Alyssa Joseph: Music and performing were always part of my household growing up. I started taking piano lessons and dance from a young age. I have been performing in some capacity since I was eight. It took me until high school to figure out I wanted my main focus to be writing songs and performing those songs.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Joseph: I definitely write as a coping mechanism. I’m a talker. And a singer haha. I work things out by talking them out. Or writing them out. I normally start by playing guitar and finding some chords I like, and then I write the lyrics and melody at the same time over that. Normally candles and mood lighting and incense are involved. It’s all about the atmosphere.

Review Fix: What inspires you?

Joseph: I definitely take a lot of inspiration from life experiences. From emotions. From relationships.

From where I’m at in my life. I work things out when I talk out loud and I also work things out when I write them and sing them out. Sometimes you have to hear yourself say something or sing something to validate it.

Review Fix: What does music mean to you?

Joseph: Music is my life. It’s what connects me to other humans. It’s how I express myself. It’s how I articulate and cope with whatever I’m going through – whether that means creating music or listening to nostalgic records that get me through the tough shit.

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?

Joseph: sadgirl, grungy, alternative, indie, singer/songwriter and raw, real, dark, honest, personal.

Review Fix:How are your live shows different from your studio work?

Joseph:My live shows are different depending on the lineup! I play solo a lot – so my songs are more stripped and raw. When I do play with a band, I think the songs are more bright and fun, just because we love performing them.

Review Fix: What inspired your latest single?

Joseph: “sadboy” is just a fun song and a light-hearted look at my past relationships and who I’ve been in those relationships. It’s less about one particular guy, and more so a general look at the dating scene, my experience in it, and the cycle of guys that you meet out there. It’s sort of a tongue-in-cheek look at my dating history and the expectation vs. reality of it all. It’s cheeky. And we all need to learn that we don’t actually want the sadboy…

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2021?

Joseph: Heal, find happiness in every day, release music, connect with people through music, cherish

the good days.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Joseph: Another single!! and then an EP. and then an LP. :)
