Review Fix Exclusive: Milan Andre Talks ‘500 Days’

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter, Milan Andre, who discusses his new single, 500 Days.

Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?

Milan Andre: I started playing guitar when I was 10. Took private lessons with the same teacher for 10 years. Then I moved to Toronto and got my bachelors of music at Humber College.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Andre: It’s very intuitive. Fully ear and emotion based. Despite having gone to school, I don’t think about music from a theoretical perspective. I write on guitar of piano. I use a lot of alternate tunings on guitar and multiple capos at times, so it really changes the landscape of the neck and throws all theory out the window, which allows me to truly connect to how things sound and feel.

Review Fix: What inspires you?

Andre: Introspective emotions, personal growth and expansion, reflective thoughts and nature.

Review Fix: What does music mean to you?

Andre: I feel that my relationship to music is complicated. Music is an old friend you get to grow with. It’s also a retrospective mirror through which you can look back at stages of your life.

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?

Andre: I love alternate tunings and using them to find layers of vibrant colours. Lot’s of subtle harmonic textures with combinations of vocal minimalism or dense harmonies. I’m not a fan of genres and putting art into boxes, so personally I would rather never describe my music to anyone and just have them listen to it.

Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?

Andre: My live shows thus far have always been solo, so I don’t recreate all the layers of texture that I would like to hear, although sometimes I do use a loop pedal to create drones and other ambient sounds. The live shows have essentially been me playing my music in its rawest of forms.

Review Fix: What inspired your latest single?

Andre: The latest single was inspired by the end of a 4-year relationship with someone and the time spent moving on while simultaneously never letting go. I feel that everyone has that one person that they will always hold a really special place for in their hearts. And if your actions and behaviour line up with theirs and the universe, maybe you’ll end up with that person.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2021?

Andre: ‘500 days’ is the first single off of my forthcoming album, which will also be titled ‘500 days’. I’m planning to release the album late summer or early fall this. There will be one more single coming out this summer as well. I also produce artists and I have a couple of albums that I am producing for artists in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. One being Paulie Garand, with who I have a feature on our song ‘reason’.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Andre: My creative evolution has been very interesting. Kristofer Harris is my producer who I work with in the UK. We’ve developed quite a great friendship and seamless way of collaborating and creating. So, I’m excited to continue working with him. I used to be really in my head about music and get really influenced by the industry side of things. I feel that with each day I step closer and closer into my authenticity as an artist, and more importantly, as an individual.
