Review Fix chats with the Murderers Luke Thompson, who discusses his origin in music and new track, Made Man.
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Luke Thompson: My first real memories of music are of my Mum playing the piano when I was tiny, and me wanting more than anything to do the same. Since then, I’ve always made music in one way or another, on my own or with others.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Thompson: Most of my ideas start as snippets, rather than sitting down to compose. Sometimes they come out fully formed, like the hook for first single SLEEP; other times it might be a few notes of a synth line, as with second single SAVE YOURSELF. I revisit the snippets and see which ones inspire me to take them further.
Review Fix: What inspires you?
Thompson: At the moment sonically I’m inspired by rich, interesting textures, but with a need for something raw. Noise, warmth, grit. Lyrically, the world is providing too many inspirations to count currently, most of them profoundly negative.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
Thompson: Dark vocal synthwave with post-punk influences.
Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?
Thompson: As yet I’ve not done live shows as MURDERERS – it started as a live project which was almost immediately waylaid by the pandemic. As such, the studio sound draws from what I would like the live sound to be; unpolished, passionate and creating a deep soundscape with relatively few moving parts.
Review Fix: What inspired your latest single?
Thompson: MADE MAN is about the lie of meritocracy and the inevitability of mediocrity.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2021?
Thompson: I’ve got some more songs in various states – perhaps some will get finished and released, perhaps not!
