Munchies 400 Feet From the Garden

SGBWith a name as generic as “Sports Grille Boston,” you’d expect mediocre service and bland tasting food at horrible prices. However, SGB is a solid watering hole, that in spite of being a tad on the expensive side, is a quick grub stop before a Celtics or Bruins game that is sure to satisfy.

Conveniently located at 132 Canal St in Boston, MA, just a block away from the TD Bank North Garden and various hotels like the Holiday Inn and the Onyx, SGB doesn’t attract the same amount of attention like other eateries in the same area, such as “The Fours,” but for a tourist in need of a quick bite, you can do much worse.

Featuring sports memorabilia and a menu that salutes some of Boston’s biggest sports legends, SGB is a great place for tourists to feel like they are at an authentic Boston bar. Filled with fans of all shapes and sizes, it’s a great venue to socialize as well and feel like you’re at a place where everyone knows your name. The waitresses also are quick and refill drinks and ask you how your meal is going. Far from rushing the customer, the staff is courteous and professional.

However, while the décor is perhaps the main reason to visit SGB, the food is equally as inviting. Possessing a hardy lineup of soups [clam chowder, of course], appetizers such as potato skins and mozzarella sticks, burgers and steaks, SGB has something for everyone. The sauted steak tips in BBQ sauce and fries are especially scrumptious, as many wouldn’t expect a steak cooked so well at a bar. With a full lineup of alcoholic beverages to compliment the food, SGB won’t wow you, but they’ll have what you need and be able to get it to you quickly. For those in a rush to get to Boston Common or catch a game at the Garden, it’s pretty tough to beat.

The prices are comparable to the food at the Garden, as an appetizer, dinner and a soft drink will run you about 25 dollars. For that, it makes more sense to at least be comfortable before the game and enjoy the food, rather than scarfing everything down during it.

Again, it may not be the best bar around the Garden, but for those who don’t want to wait on-line at other the other bars, SGB is a decent alternative that will fill your tummy.
