Welcome Back Alice

“Alice in Wonderland” delivers you to a world and provides a journey that will delight all the way through, and make you not want to come back to reality.

After returning to Wonderland, a place that she always dreamed about 13 years prior, a now 19-year-old Alice, in the midst of deciding to get married or not, quickly discovers she has even bigger problems. When she arrives in Wonderland, she is told that she must slay a Jabberwocky, a dragon-like creature under the control of the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter), who rules over Wonderland’s citizens with an iron first and a bulbous head. Alice meets all kinds of weird and goofy characters, one of whom is the Mad Hatter, played by the talented and brilliant Johnny Depp. Even with his help and assistance from several other charming and endearing characters however, she quickly finds out that it will be no picnic.

Director Tim Burton, known for creating films with creative thought and unique worlds, does so once again here. With great special 3-D effects, as well as topnotch sound, this film is quite enjoyable once it moves deeper into the plot. However, at first, it does start off extremely slow, as Burton intends to introduce the main character, Alice, played by the lovely Mia Woasikowska, who resembles a younger Gweneth Paltrow. Her charm and lovely features let her glow onscreen, making the audience melt as it watches her beautiful smile, listens to her charming voice.

Depp does a brilliant job as the Mad Hatter, as his scary look and insane personality will only make you love him more than fear him. The way he switches his accents from English to Scottish during the film is a unique but special style to watch. Carter as the Red Queen is funny, and gives the movie some sizzle, as does every other dopey character in the film, not to mention the lovely Anne Hathaway, who plays the White Queen. Her beautiful charm and elegant look give her character some extra gloss as she sparkles like a shinning star.

Overall, “Alice in Wonderland” is a fun film, and a must if you enjoy daydreaming for a while. So if you decide to go to the theater, don’t decide on six impossible things before breakfast.

At the site, I'm a music, television and graphic novel kind of guy and that's what I'll be writing for the most part. Expect some book and music reviews as well though [insert demon horns here]. I grew up in Bensonhurst Brooklyn, the same neighborhood many of the best mafia films of our day were based on, idolizing guys like Robert Deniro, Martin Scorsese and Al Pacino. I'm also a big sports fan and follow the New York Yankees immensely.
