The Real Show

Each year, games related to sports seem to improve only in the graphical department and of course, updated rosters. However with “The Show 10” on the PS3, there are plenty of improvements such as better gameplay, improved stadium environments, and player models.

Because of this, there is no question that Sony, after several solid games in this series, finally got it right. There will be no more excuses on how “MLB 10 the Show” lacks the major components of a complete baseball game.

One of the new features to The Show is the home run derby, which makes the baseball experience much more fun and exciting. The option to pick any stadium of your choosing gives the home run derby that exciting effect, not to mention the reaction of teammates after the ball is launched out of the ball park. You also have the option to manage any team in the big leagues and run it just like you would in real life in the manager mode.

The catcher mode is also a neat new feature where you have the option to call the game as an actual catcher. Now all the power can be in your hands by making the tough decisions during the game whether it be to bring a player of the bench for defense, to pinch hit, take out a pitcher, and bring someone out of the bullpen as well as working with a pitcher in putting down the right signs in which he can adjust to and be comfortable with.  Just like in actual Baseball, this game has what you are looking for.

Nonetheless, the highlight of The Show 10 is obviously the graphics. You do not see many sports games come to life-like this one. The player features, movements, batting stances, and pitching motions are exactly similar to the players in the majors, making the game much more realistic, not to mention you can actually see the faces of the fans in the stands, and the players jerseys wave in the wind while they are at bat, or even playing the field to catch a fly ball.

On another note, the gameplay for “The Show 10” is simple, giving you the option to run after the ball, dive, and throw. The way these motions are replicated gives the game an authentic look and feel while you play.

However, what is tremendous about this game is the home runs, which look extremely realistic. Gone forever are the cheesy camera angles that just show the ball high in the sky. When the ball is hit for a home run, it actually shows a great shot of the ball carrying until it finally leaves the park with no exaggeration. A perfect example is the New Yankee Stadium or even Fenway Park. When a ball is hit out of each of these ball parks, they have that carry to it and fly out quick. They say that the New Yankee Stadium is a lunching pad and the balls fly out of their like laser beams, well in this game they are portrayed very similar.

The stadiums in the game also have an authentic look to them, replicating the real ball parks. For instance the New Yankee Stadium, Citi Field, and even the new Target field in Minnesota all look extremely realistic just by the way the dimensions of the ball parks, and the amenities surrounding them on the field as well as inside before the actual game starts. The way the ball ricochet off the wall in several stadiums have that real sound effect just like in Fenway Park, or Citi Field.  At times home runs can easily be taken away while the ball is being up by the green monster. As a fan of baseball, you will find that part of the game to be really worth playing. There are times that you get that feeling of playing a baseball game that has the complete package, with no-nonsense involved.

As a result, “MLB 10 The Show” is one of those games that make you feel apart of the action while you play.  The energy from the crowd alone makes it all worth it.

Simply put, if you love baseball then this is the game to purchase. Everything about it is realistic and as a fan and a gamer you won’t be disappointed.

I grew up in Bensonhurst Brooklyn, the same neighborhood many of the best mafia films of our day were based on, idolizing guys like Robert Deniro, Martin Scorsese and Al Pacino. I'm also a big sports fan and follow the New York Yankees immensely.
