A Flaccid Season Finale

Episode Commentary: Even Steven or Luckiest Kid in Detroit

After picking up the intensity over the course of the second season, “Hung” proved that it was more than a show with promise. Introducing more characters and developing the ones they had even further, it was a show that was full of drama and intrigue.

That all went out the window with the season two finale, which was void of any steam, lust, wit or even fun.

From the situation between Ray and Jessica to the relationship of Mike and Frances, nothing is resolved. As a matter of fact, there’s barely any headway made at all.

It makes you wonder exactly what the writers were thinking here when they put this episode together.

Overall, it nearly washes away all the momentum the series had going into this episode and makes you think the series has little wiggle room going into season three.

While it’s nice to see Ray trying to come to grips with his life and the chance to put the pieces back together, nothing actually happens in this episode. With Ray telling Lenore he’s done with hooking, you get the idea that couldn’t be farther from the truth, but little development is done to prove those notions correct.

The same thing goes with Tanya and Ray back on the same page, which makes it feel like the old antics of the “Happiness Consultants” are about to begin again. However, there’s not enough else here to leave you drooling until the next season begins.

Speaking of antics, Ronnie’s have been great and his performance in this episode nearly saves it. Regardless, there’s absolutely no action aside from this, making this episode feel like a primer for something bigger.

Unfortunately viewers will have to wait a year to see if that is indeed the case.

The way it seems right now, the first episode of season three has to be a blockbuster or “Hung” may not make it to season four.
