A Romance Comedy That Goes the Distance

Having met Garrett (Justin Long) at a bar in New York City during her summer internship, Erin (Drew Barrymore) did not even imagine that their romantic adventure will be the beginning of endless trips and life-changing decisions. But this is what “Going the Distance” is all about.

Fluffy romantic comedy about true love that does not care about thousands of miles, the movie seems a bit unreal at moments. At the same time, it is full of jokes, some of which are dirty, while others are ridiculously funny. Therefore, if you don’t mind the fluff, you will find this motion picture quite entertaining.

As we find out from the beginning, there were many girlfriends in Garrett’s life, whom he didn’t care about. The moment he meets Erin though, everything miraculously changes. Even the way they speak to each other, in a seriously sarcastic manner, is similar. They seem to be the perfect match; and still, there is a problem: the distance.

Understanding that distant relationship is hard to bear, Erin warns Garrett from the beginning that it will be nothing serious. They get along well, so they will definitely have a lot of fun, but once she leaves New York, their relationship will end. In reality, it does not work, however. Slowly getting involved with each other, the young people realize that they cannot end their romance so quickly and abruptly.

Among other difficulties the couple deals with, are Garrett’s roommate Dan (Charlie Day), who can hear everything that is going on between them even though there is a wall dividing their rooms, and Erin’s married sister Corinne (Christina Applegate), who, to everyone’s surprise, does not like the fact that her sister and her boyfriend passionately make love on her dinner table. Corinne is very protective of Erin. She is not going to allow a man living on the other coast break her sister’s heart, especially that there was a precedent. Erin was in love with a man and she left her school and her job for his sake, but their relationship didn’t work. Neither Erin nor Corinne want it to happen again, now that life is getting back on track.

In addition to this, there are no jobs for Garrett in San Francisco and no one wants to hire Erin in New York. It seems like everything is against the couple.

But love wins, of course. Not seduced by her hot co-worker, Damon (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), Erin keeps thinking about Garrett. Trying to reduce his sexual tension, Garrett offers Erin to have sex over the phone, which doesn’t work. They gradually come to understand that it is quite difficult to go on this way. And still, they are made for each other and they have to be together.

Watching the movie, you keep wondering whether the love at first sight is really so strong that it can stay alive over a long period of time. This is the love we all dream about, but it seems to be surreal, something that we will continue to look for and will never find. This also makes the movie interesting, as people tend to enjoy things they do not believe in, but never stop dreaming about.
