Bat Out of Hell

Episode Commentary: The Third Man

As you settle into the sixth season of Supernatural you’ll find that Dean is pretty solid in the parenting department, Castiel has been an “ethereal wavelength” for a year and is “rusty on his people skills” and Sam’s behavior is only becoming even more eerily disturbing than usual. It’s just another ordinary day for the Winchester boys and your favorite angel as they try to figure out another angelic mystery.

This time it’s the staff of Moses and someone’s selling it piece by piece. What’s more the price is your soul. Since Sam and Dean averted the apocalypse it’s been total chaos in heaven. Important magical implements such as “Chuck Heston’s magic stick” are missing and God’s nowhere to be found. As usual the angels are having daddy issues and the “hairless apes” better known as mankind are stuck in the middle.

As the episode unfolds we see what Sam and Castiel have sacrificed since the apocalypse-that-never-was and it isn’t pretty. They’ve compromised many of their principles and the audience will be disturbed as to how far they go to get information. Still it makes for great drama and witty dialogue. The one-liners in this episode are spot on and you’ll be finding any way you can to reference them in everyday conversation.

Once the episode comes to a close we see that Sam’s stint in hell seems to have put a lock-down on his humanity. It also leaves the audience wondering what broke Sam out of his “cage” since the oncoming civil war in heaven has taken all of Castiel’s attention.

Missions aside will the Winchesters be able to recover from the changes to their psyches in the past year? Only time will tell when next we meet them they’ll be battling vampiric forces. Hopefully they won’t be fighting each other in the process.
