An Old-School Showdown

An intriguing story line, a fun read, to go along with some fascinating action is what you can expect from reading “Jonah Hex: No Way Back.”

Written by Justin Gray [“The Last Resort”] and Jimmy Palmiotti [“Face Full Of Violence”], it is fair to say that this graphic novel is in a league of it’s own; it is that good.

From the first time you open the book, you will be brought to an adventure filled with guts, and charisma. Set in Virginia City, Nevada “No Way Back” has that western feel of a John Wayne or Clint Eastwood film. Now if that won’t get you excited, then you obviously dislike westerns, but in this witty tale, you’ll definitely make the exception of a gun-slinging showdown involving one of DC’s baddest bounty hunters, Jonah Hex.

In this western showdown we witness Hex’s heartbreaking and painful past. Growing up with an abusive father was not half as bad as having a mother walk out on him while he was a child. That obviously caused plenty of pain in his life, which is why he turned out to be the man that he is, which is a no nonsense gunslinger who will take out any criminal that gets in his path.

Along the way, Hex must come to terms with the death of a loved one, and battle a ferocious nemesis, El Papagayo, and his gang of bandits, while attempting to make peace with his past.

With an interesting and simple setting this is the type of graphic novel that you can read over and over again. It is written exceptionally well, and it gives you such comfort knowing that the story has a tranquil flow. You will be shocked on how quickly the time will pass when you are done reading it. There is definitely no lackluster calamity here. Tony Dezuniga [“Man Thing”] does a mesmerizing job of illustrating “No Way Back.” His portrayal of the wild west is absolutely unmitigated. The characters are rowdy and the action is flawless, which is everything you would want to witness in a western ambiance.

However, the best part about “No Way Back” is that you can literally feel the tension and anticipation headed towards the climax. A classic showdown between El Papagayo and Hex is an absolute treat because the action feels so authentic. The pacing of this situation will literally bring chills down your spine. You will be so locked into the story that you will feel the same fear the characters do in the book. You know you are reading something special here. From beginning to end there is a ton of excitement that will have you in awe with the eccentric scenery that will make you feel like you are apart of the story. That alone tells you that “No Way Back” is simply unique in its own way, and one of a kind.

I grew up in Bensonhurst Brooklyn, the same neighborhood many of the best mafia films of our day were based on, idolizing guys like Robert Deniro, Martin Scorsese and Al Pacino. I'm also a big sports fan and follow the New York Yankees immensely.
