Thoughts on 40 Hours of Fallout: New Vegas

After 40 hours of “Fallout: New Vegas” the bugs have gotten to the point where playing through the game can be a nuisance at times.

Is it still a great game?

Yes.

However, there’s no question that if this game had spent a little bit more time in development, it could have been one of the best games of all time.

For those that don’t remember our gameplay experience, Boone went missing in our game after we told him to meet us at the Lucky 38 after about 15 hours of gameplay. Around hour 42, we decided to take a nap at our suite at the casino, to only see the sniper waiting in our bedroom for us. How did he exactly get there? The securitron Victor told us before that only you could enter the casino. [after we met Mr. House for the first time], so naturally, you’d expect Boone to wait at the entrance for you, right?

Wrong.

Then, when we finally get him back on our team, he keeps using a machete instead of his sniper rifle. Why even have him on your team if he can’t snipe? This can be fixed by talking to him and changing his weapon or asking him to use a ranged attack, but every few minutes, he’ll revert back to the big knife.

Overall, it’s just another bad bug that tests your patience.

Aside from that, numerous bugs with the camera getting stuck in first person mode hurt the gameplay experience. The same thing goes for the disguise system. Even if you’re dressed as a member of a certain group in order to protect yourself, you’re still often attached for no reason. This system could have worked great in theory, but like a few other elements of the game, it just lacks the polish that the series is known for.

However, with the bevy of side quests and endless amounts of exploring, this is a game we haven’t been able to put down yet.
