There’s a reason that Secret Warriors’ 23rd issue is called “Rebirth.†Remember Sebastian Druid? He was let go from Nick Fury’s team of covert operatives for being a liability. Traveling back to his native Hawaii and encountering John Garrett, the self-proclaimed Metal man on his couch, Druid still has no clue as to why he was fired.
It’s simple – he’s fat. But it’s not his girth that’s holding Druid back, it’s his lack of control over his life. And that has seeped into his inability to control his powers. In Fury’s line of work, you need to have mastery over your abilities. After all to be on “the wrong side of being average†could at worst make you wish for death. Thus begins Druid’s training.
Sebastian comes through, but after J.T.’s betrayal and Phobos being on the wrong side of the sword “god-killer,†according to Garrett it’s too late.
Each episode of Secret Warriors will leave you wondering who lives and dies. Essentially no one is safe.
Fury’s son Mikel leads a third covert team, only with less angst. In the issue called “Wheels Within Wheels†we see Mikel, under his father’s orders gather a group of super and genetically altered humans. There is some witty banter, and a masterly told myth that will make you appreciate Jonathan Hickman’s writing with every page you turn. However, in the beginning of the comic Fury is standing in front of a grave in the pouring rain. The dichotomy of the dark tone in the beginning of the book alongside the formation of Mikel’s grey team is no surprise. Still, don’t think you know what’s going to happen next. This is Nick Fury, a man who fought beside Captain America during WW II and still looks like a hard-living 45 year old. And he wasn’t even frozen in ice for 50 some odd years either.
With titles like “Rebirth†and “Wheels Within Wheels†Secret Warriors will have you guessing. Hickman has a tendency to hide cliffhangers and secrets in plain sight, so don’t try to theorize on what happens next – just sit back and enjoy the ride.
