Review Fix’s Thoughts on a New Mario All-Stars

This past holiday season, Nintendo re-released Super Mario All-Stars for the Nintendo Wii in conjunction with its 25th anniversary, to tremendous fanfare.

However, we here at Review Fix believe it’s time for Nintendo to create a new compilation, which chronicles the best handful of games Mario has ever been a part of, after his initial run of the NES.

It’s not that we have anything against 8-bit Mario, as it was the stuff our prepubescent dreams were made of, but with dozens of new games featuring the brother plumbers since All Stars was released, it’s time for a brand new compilation.

But with that, comes an even bigger question- what games would be featured on it?

We here at Review Fix share our picks for, if it’s ever created, a new Super Mario All-Stars.

1: Super Smash Bros (Nintendo 64):
Mario was never in a fighting game before this title came out, but when it was all said and done, Brooklyn’s favorite plumber proved he could stand toe to toe with all of the heroes and villains in the Nintendo universe. With so many characters to choose from and up to four-players being able to duke it out all at once, Nintendo created a formula here that they would use in over a dozen more Mario games in the future.

2: Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars (Super Nintendo):
Not to be confused with the Paper Mario series or the other RPGs Mario has appeared in over the years, Super Mario RPG was a deep and colorful adventure that is easily one of the greatest games featuring the character. Don’t let the cute characters of this game fool you. Just as solid as the heavyweight RPGs on the Super Nintendo such as Chrono Trigger, Earthbound and Act Raiser, Mario RPG is a forgotten classic.

3: Luigi’s Mansion (Gamecube): Even though this game features mainly Luigi, the Ghostbusters-esque gameplay and gorgeous graphics set an early standard of excellence on the Gamecube. The fact that this was and is so different from all the other Mario made and makes it so unique and worthy of being on the list. Much like Mario RPG, it’s a game that never got the credit it so rightfully deserves.

4: The New Super Mario Bros: (Wii) Regardless of how new this game is, it’s one of the most important in the library of games that encompass the Mario universe. Why? It’s old school, but looks great, yet takes full advantage of the Wii’s technology. Did we mention it’s fun too? What else more can you want from a game?
