When Icons Return

Yeah Sting is back and he’s the new TNA champ, but this company has bigger problems and concerns right now.

TNA caught a lot of flack last week with their vignette that looked incredibly like the one the WWE used to promote The Undertaker’s return.

Obviously their way of poking fun at the fact that the WWE couldn’t sign Sting, TNA should be concentrating on other things, such as developing their home-grown stars.

Logically, it makes no sense to make fun of the competition that gets three million more viewers a week.

In order to clean up this mess, TNA had to start off this episode of Impact with a bang.

Right off the bat however, TNA wasted 15 minutes with Dixie Carter, Immortal and Fortune in the ring simply blabbering and not getting anything started.

The same thing can be said when mentioning the wedding angle between Karen and Jeff Jarrett. Completely botched. Before any ambiance could be created, Kurt Angle ran out and threw his ex-wife into the wedding cake. The fact that they had the gaul to do it again just goes to show that they have no idea what their fanbase wants to see.

Having Angelina from “The Jersey Shore” and New York Jets linebacker Bart Scott on the show didn’t help much either, as both felt flat and were trying too hard. When are wrestling companies going to learn that they have to play the celebrity card very carefully? For every Cyndi Lauper and Karl Malone there are way too many Dennis Rodmans and Master Ps.

Angelina and Scott definitely fall into the latter category.

With so many missteps, Sting’s return [for the millionth time] wasn’t nearly effective as it could have been and once again, every storyline is a complete mess.

Matches:

Beer Money vs. Gunner and Murphy: A quick match full of high impact moves. It’s amazing how much better Robert Roode has gotten over the past four years. There was once a time when his singles matches could put the biggest mark to sleep. Now a part of one of the best tag teams in TNA history, he led his team in the ring with several solid clotheslines and got the crowd into the match.

Ink Inc’s appearance afterward obviously sets up the next pay per view, which should be a decent match, considering TNA has no other tag teams to challenge the champions, with Team 3D dissolved, the Motor City Machine Guns on hiatus and Eric Young and Orlando Jordan simply not the right team to get a PPV match.

Sarita w/Rosita vs. Velvet Skye w/ Angelina Love: A sub-par match that ended with Skye hitting a sloppy DDT. Say what you want about her in-ring ability, but Skye is one of the best looking female wrestlers in TNA history and because of that, she’ll always have a place on Impact. We just hope she continues to train and get better in the ring.

While the match was nothing special, there were some interesting developments after the match with Angelina from “The Jersey Shore,” Robbie E and Cookie, in what looks to be one of the worst six-man tag matches of all time, but with some of the best looking participants.

Scott Steiner vs. Rob Terry: Terry is still green and his matches are still a complete bore. To think, TNA handed him the Global Championship a year ago and tried to spoon feed him success. Now he’s just a body for Steiner to throw around. And throw around Steiner did, using a Samoan Drop off the top rope in addition to a Belly to belly and T-Bone Suplex before administering his signature Steiner Recliner to end the match.

Hernandez vs. Matt Morgan: Ending in a DQ, this match is continuing to build the feud between two of the most talented big men in TNA. A tease more than anything, it’ll be interesting to see what happens in a few weeks between the two.

Sting vs. Jeff Hardy: Aside from horrible-looking tights, Sting looked solid in his first match in four months. Hardy sold three scorpion death drops and ironically put over the much older Sting. A decent paced match, it was a nice way to close out the night, but the match didn’t tell much of a story and was essentially Hardy jobbing out to Sting.

The crowd seemed to enjoy it but through all of this, the question remains as to how making Hardy a transitional champion and putting the title around the waist of a wrestler over 50 years old can help TNA do what it needs to do, push the young guys that the company can build a foundation for the future with.
