For the first time ever, two popular Brooklyn breweries have announced that they will be selling their beers in cans this summer.
According to the L Magazine, the first to go the route of canning their brews is Sixpoint. The Red Hook brewery announced that four of its popular beers—Sweet Action, Righteous Rye, Crisp Lager and the Bengali Tiger IPA—will pop up in stores around the Northeast after Memorial day, spreading across New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Massachusetts in 16 oz four-packs.
On the heels of that announcement, Brooklyn Brewery also mentioned on their blog that they are releasing their Brooklyn Summer Ale in 12-packs of 12 oz. cans. The post also lists locations throughout the city where the refreshing beverage can be purchased. Unlike Sixpoint, however, Brooklyn Brewery’s beverages have all been bottled and are sold throughout the eastern United States. They also have released 12 and 16 oz. cans of their Brooklyn Lager for special events in the past.
Beer aficionados are often dissuaded by cans, usually regarding them as lower quality products, but Brooklyn Brewery’s Karl Knoop explained to the L Magazine that cans are actually “lightweight, compact, and block out harmful sunlight, which causes beer to ‘skunk.’ New canning technologies keep the beer fresh-tasting, so forget previous notions that canned beer is inferior.â€
Cans also trap less air with the beer, keeping the beverage from going stale as quickly. The L also cites efficiency in shipping as cans are easier to stack. Cans also are more likely to be recycled and require less energy to produce than glass bottles. Other non-Brooklyn but fairly local beers who have taken the canning route include Sly Fox Beer of Pennsylvania-based Sly Fox Beer and upstate New York’s Butternuts Beer and Ale, most notably makers of Pork Slap Pale Ale.
