Nothing Decent Borrowed

The movie begins with Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) walking into a surprise party thrown by lifelong best friend Darcy (Kate Hudson), who instantly steals the limelight. In the first five minutes it becomes clear that the main dilemma of the movie pivots on the fact that Rachel is a total pushover and Darcy, a wild party girl who must be the center of attention. Five more minutes in and Rachel begins an affair with Dex (Colin Egglesfield), Darcy’s fiancé whom she had attended law school with.

The plot then follows a predictable storyline in which Dex is torn between the path expected of him and what he wants. Meanwhile, Rachel feels guilty about the affair, but deems that it is her turn to take what she wants from Darcy. Awkwardly placed flashbacks prove that Dex and Rachel always had feelings for each other, and that in essence Rachel handed him over to Darcy on a silver platter.

The only relief from the corny lines and overly dramatized scenes at bars, and a weekend house in the Hamptons, is Rachel’s best friend and confidant Ethan (John Krasinski). But wait, he also has feelings for Rachel.

Even the ending, in which every person ends up with the wrong counterpart, was incomprehensible. “Something Borrowed” ultimately proves to be a movie so uncomfortably cumbersome and cringe-worthy that bathroom breaks are a welcome solace.
