THE CELL and THE HIVE THEATRE COMPANY are pleased to announce the world premiere production of Terry Quinn’s BAD EVIDENCE, directed by Kira Simring. BAD EVIDENCE will play a limited engagement at The Cell (338 West 23rd Street New York, NY 10011). BAD EVIDENCE will be playing in rep with MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, as part of the cell’s Summer of Lust. Performances begin Thursday, July 7 and continue through Sunday, July 31. Opening Night is Saturday, July 9 (2 p.m.).

the cell and The Hive have joined forces to present a smoldering portrait of contemporary relationships.

A faltering marriage compels a husband and wife to make a pact – to confess searing truths in the heat of passion. The exposure leads to a confrontation with four of their friends, and even deeper revelations.

The production features scenic design by Justin Couchara, costume design by Christina Kim, and lighting design by Nick Gonsman. Justin Stasiw is the sound designer and Jessica Biggert is the stage manager.

BIOGRAPHIES

TERRY QUINN (Playwright) is the author of two novels; a biography and a volume of poetry; and is co-editor of, and contributor to, the two-volume fiction anthology From the Heart of Brooklyn. His short stories, memoir pieces and plays have appeared in many literary journals and national magazines. He has written, directed and performed in numerous dramas and comedies produced on stages in New York City, England, France, Holland and Germany, and on National Public Radio, including his plays: Bad Evidence, Love Hurts, Wilde Nights, Unaccustomed to Fear, Rappacini’s Daughter and, co-authored with George Plimpton, One Sunday at the Fitzgeralds and Zelda, Scott and Ernest – the latter having featured Norman Mailer as Ernest Hemingway in the premiere performance. He also wrote the book, lyrics and music for two music theater works (Rasputin and A Second Chance) that have received Off Broadway and regional productions. A volume of his poetry, Mad for Newyorktown, was published by Straw House Press.

Published in The Paris Review, Mr. Quinn’s dramatic dialogue, Dear Bunny, Dear Volodya: The Friendship and the Feud, has had twenty-one productions to date in the United States and Europe, with Dmitri Nabokov portraying his father, novelist Vladimir Nabokov. Two chamber operas for which he wrote the librettos have received seven productions, including world premiere performances at the 92nd Street Y’s Kaufmann Concert Hall, in New York City (Hester Prynne at Death, with music by Stephen Paulus), and The Concertgebouw, in Amsterdam (John Adams in Amsterdam: A Song for Abigail, with music by Gary Fagin). A dramatic song cycle, titled A Distant Love: Songs of John and Abigail Adams, for which he wrote the libretto (score by Gary Fagin), had a three-performance world premiere at the Brooklyn Historical Society, St. Ann’s School and St. Francis College in the fall of 2009.

Mr. Quinn has written the libretto for The Mark of Cain (music by Matthew Harris), an opera to be produced by the Manhattan-based Chelsea Opera in the fall of 2012.

Mr. Quinn is currently collaborating with composer Stephen Paulus on a full-length opera, The Birthmark. He is also completing the librettos for a dramatic song cycle, Legendary Deaths, and a one-act opera, Oscar / Sarah, / Salome, as well as a music theater work, Georgette’s Last Rehearsal, for which he is writing the playscript, lyrics and score.

KIRA SIMRING (Director) is the Artistic Director of the cell, A Twenty First Century Salon â„¢, alongside Nancy Manocherian, Founding Artistic Director. Kira directs many of the cell’s productions and is the resident director for The Center for Contemporary Opera’s Atilier Series. She has developed and directed many new plays off Broadway and off-off Broadway, including “Guilty” at the Acorn Theater and “Blackout” at the Kirk Theatre. She has also directed Shakespeare regionally with New Village Arts Theatre in San Diego and Handel at the Connecticut Grand Opera. Kira is currently directing a workshop production of a new opera, Enemies, a Love Story, at Julliard. Kira earned her MFA in Directing at the Actors Studio Drama School of New School University where she received a Shubert Fellowship, and her BA in Anthropology at Smith College.
