Witches vs. Fangers

Episode Commentary: Spellbound

As the plot or plots thicken in the vamp thriller series “True Blood,” it is fair to say that this fourth season has definitely picked up, which makes it one of the best seasons thus far. After this latest episode, the addiction continues to overwhelm and excite.

“Spellbound” picks up the pace with the many story lines. While the many of them seemed to be problematic at first, due to their lack of consistent flow, they now have a grasp of the audience. They now have our full attention.

The episode starts off with Jessica into the sunlight and while it was predictable that her character wouldn’t be killed off, it was also a relief when Jason come to her rescue. With this, the episode focuses on the development of each character and their plot lines. Jessica’s feelings for Jason start to show, but the question remains, does she make the right decision that involves Hoyt?

Things pick up further when Lafayette becomes subject to the mysterious ghost who interacts with Terry and Arlene’s baby, which also leads to the audience discovering an important part of her past. Alcide and Debbie continue to get a feel for the new wolf pack, as we discover an interesting plot involving Marcus and Luna, which could have a dangerous impact on Sam, who is also dealing with his troubled brother, Tommy.

Speaking of Tommy, he seems to be headed into some trouble once again, by shifting into Mrs. Thortonberry and scamming money. As for the major plot line in this episode, Bill decides to make peace with Marnie/Antonia by promising not to harm her or her any humans for that matter. With a showdown in the Bon Tomps cemetery, things don’t go as planned, which causes a war between the vamps, Marny and her coven. This causes Sookie to be in danger as well. The episode cliffhanger leaves the audience anxious to see what will happen next week.

Overall, this episode was solid. Sookie and Eric’s relationship was enhanced by a unique sex scene. What is great about this season thus far is that the episodes continue to get better and character development continues to improve. Once you thought the high is gone, you suddenly get another fix.

As the show reached its climax this week, the suspense quickly rose. This directly connects to the fate of Eric Northman; it will be interesting to see if he will ever go back to the barbarian Viking he once was.

Many questions are still left to be answered, which makes it that much more exciting and worth sinking your fangs into.

I grew up in Bensonhurst Brooklyn, the same neighborhood many of the best mafia films of our day were based on, idolizing guys like Robert Deniro, Martin Scorsese and Al Pacino. I'm also a big sports fan and follow the New York Yankees immensely.
