Part of the gang is in Los Angeles, part of the gang is in Manhattan and part of the gang is somewhere else in the world.
Serena (Blake Lively) is a production assistant on a movie. Dan (Penn Badgley) is soft balling it up in East Hampton. Chuck (Ed Westwick) has become the world’s newest Evel Knievel. Nate (Chace Crawford) is yachting in an LA harbor. Blair (Leighton Meester) and Prince Louis (Hugo Becker) are back on the Upper East Side after summering in Monaco and sending out their save-the-dates.
The producers quickly explain the axing of Taylor Momsen and Connor Paolo. Jessica Szohr’s demotion to sporadic guest star came courtesy of a move to Spain in last season’s finale.
A summer has passed, and no one has changed—what a surprise. Every character at this point in a series is not going to change too dramatically. Plot twists and turns will unnerve the characters, but everyone eventually resolves to their true selves.
We quickly find out some interesting season four finale cliffhangers. We know who’s pregnant. We know who may not even be getting a save-the-date. We know who still gets everything easily. We now know that someone knows something someone else did for that someone.
We know a lot, but this season premiere is exactly like other season premieres of every other recurring show—not too much happens. It’s an introduction to the newest season.
We do meet new characters. Elizabeth Hurley gets her cougar on as she becomes an UESer’s newest love interest. Michael Michele (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days) becomes Serena’s new boss in L.A. Ethan Peck (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) is Serena’s ever-constant new rival.
Kaylee DeFer returns as Serena’s fake cousin Charlie Rhodes when she moves to a place she thinks no one from the UES will ever find her – L.A.
This season might turn out to be an interesting one. The past four seasons have included so much drama and so many crazy happenings that besides a pregnancy (or two!), some new love interests and some ever-present familial drama, I’m not really sure what Josh Schwartz and Co. could throw at us.
Guess we’ll just have to watch and see.
Gossip Girl airs Monday at 8 p.m. on The CW.
