Dexter Season Six Thoughts

When we think of Dexter Morgan, we think of a serial killer with a dark passenger, living by a code his step dad gave to him.

In the past seasons, we witnessed Dexter battle a different array of serial killers, from the Ice Truck Killer, the Trinity Killer and now most recently, the Doomsday Killer. This sixth season of Dexter is quite different from the past though because it focuses on religion. Throughout this season, we saw Dexter experiment with religion. There are new characters that are introduced in this season such as Professor Gellar, played by Edward James Olmos, Travis Marshall, played by Collin Hanks and Brother Sam, played by Mos Def. This season started off intently, with several brutal killings, but as the season went on, the main plot line got boring and started to lose its luster.

This season focused on a new serial killer wreaking havoc in Miami. Travis Marshall [Hanks] known as the Doomsday Killer is religious freak who brutally murders people by following sections from the Bible. Marshall takes orders from Professor Gellar, who says they are the chosen ones and must follow God’s plan to pick random people to be part of these religious tableaus. Now that these killings have the attention of Miami Metro, they suddenly have their hands full, not to mention having a new boss- Debra Morgan becomes the new Lieutenant.

Dexter does his usual research of the Doomsday Killer and comes across a man named Brother Sam instead. Sam works in a car garage as a mechanic and has changed his ways by accepting God in his life after spending time in jail for murder. What is interesting about Brother Sam is that he convinces Dexter about controlling his Dark Passenger and by accepting God in his life. As a result Dexter shows a bit of a religious side during several episodes. When Brother Sam is killed by someone whom he tried to help put his life together, Dexter’s dark passenger takes over and is back to his old ways. During this season, we see a familiar face return forcing Dexter to have an even darker side. He then realizes that he must go back and find the Doomsday Killer.

This season was not very strong; it lacked an interesting storyline and was very predictable when it came to Professor Gellar’s character. The season then crashed when Debra starts talking to a psychiatrist and discovers that she is in love with Dexter. At this point, it seems the writers and creator of the show are truly running out of ideas and are making this series, which was once an exciting dramatic rollercoaster, a generic and unattractive soap opera.

The only positive part of this season was the finale which has Travis Marshall, The Doomsday Killer lying on Dexter’s table. When Dexter sticks a knife through his chest like he usually does to his victims, a familiar face unexpectedly walks in and witnesses his dark secret, leaving a potential interesting storyline that will take place next season.

Let the anticipation begin. It’s the only thing worth waiting for.

I grew up in Bensonhurst Brooklyn, the same neighborhood many of the best mafia films of our day were based on, idolizing guys like Robert Deniro, Martin Scorsese and Al Pacino. I'm also a big sports fan and follow the New York Yankees immensely.
