Review Fix’s M. Night Free List of Top Ten Movies With an Unexpected Twist

While you watch a film, you focus on the plot, the characters and the anticipation of where the story will take you. However there are certain movies that you experience in your life that are different, not because of their story or characters, but because they are unique in the sense that they throw you a curveball. How did you not see that coming? Those unexpected twists and climaxs still have you talking.

Here’s a top ten list of movies with an unexpected twist.

10: The Number 23: Walter Sparrow [Carrey] who becomes obsessed with a novel that he believes was written about him. Every time he comes across numbers in the book, they not only add up to 23 in the story, but also in reality. Is this all a coincidence or has Sparrow gone crazy? The audience discovers the truth when the climax hits.

9:  The Ward: John Carpenter’s latest film which is about a young woman, Kristen, who is sent to a psychiatric ward after burning down a house and not knowing why or remembering that she did it. While in the Ward, Kristen is terrorized by a ghost. As the movie goes on, we find out the shocking truth about Kristen, the Ghost and many other revelations.

8: High Tension: A French film that follows two friends, Marie and Alexa, as they encounter loads of trouble and blood while vacationing at Alexa’s parents country home , as a mysterious killer invades their quiet getaway. Throughout this film, we find out several horrific secrets and an unexpected twist that will have you left in awe.

7: Identity:  A thriller starring John Cusak [“2012”] that follows a group of people stranded in a hotel on a stormy night. During the night, they notice  they start to get killed off one by one. Overall, this is one of those films that have an unexpected twist towards the climax that you do not see coming, and when it hits, you will know why.

6: Running Scared: An action thriller starring Paul Walker [“Fast and the Furious”] that is a high octane action crime drama from beginning to end. After a drug op gone bad, Joey Gaselle [Walker] is in charge of disposing the gun that shot a dirty cop. This is one of those films that will leave you scratching your head in frustration because you were not able to figure it out yourself when all is said and done.

5: Shutter Island: This film follows Teddy Daniels [DiCaprio] a U.S. Marshal that investigates the disappearance of a patient who escaped from the hospital of the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding nearby. While we journey with Daniels to investigate this sudden disappearance, we find out the truth about Shutter Island and Daniels himself.

4: Saw:  A film with a memorable twist will also have you squeamish throughout. With a dead body lying in between them, two men wake up in a room after being captured by a serial killer known as Jigsaw. Throughout the film, the two men are forced to play a deadly game of survival by having to complete daunting tasks. When the climax reaches, a shocking twist is unveiled that will leave the audience enamored.

3: Funny Games:  A film about two psychopaths that hold a family hostage in their cabin. While we witness this family experience physical abuse throughout the film, the tables finally turn in their favor, and when they think they have the upper hand in taking out the two psychos, one of the most unique and head scratching occurrences take place in the history of film.

2: Mullholand Drive:  One of the wackiest and artistic films from the unique but genius director, David Lynch. After a car crash on Mulholland Drive causes a woman to experience amnesia. She then meets another woman who is looking to be an actress in Hollywood. Together they search for clues and answers across Los Angeles in a twisting venture beyond dreams and reality. “Mulholland Drive” is one of those films that will have the audience scratch their heads and being left with many questions on what they had just witnessed during one pivotal point of the film.

1: Psycho: An Alfred Hitchcock classic that is memorable for its unexpected twist. This film is about a young woman steals $40,000 from her employer’s client and encounters a young motel proprietor too long under the domination of his mother. Although this film is memorable in so many different ways, it is also considered to be a horror classic; nonetheless it is the unexpected twist towards the climax that has audiences still talking about it today.
