iTunes Single of the Week Review: Chiddy Bang’s ‘Handclaps & Guitars’

Chidera “Chiddy” Anamege and Noah “Xaphoon Jones” Beresin, are the two men who make up the alternative-hip-hop duo Chiddy Bang and together they take their first step towards hip-hop world domination with their single, “Handclaps & Guitars,” this week’s iTunes Single of The Week.

Chiddy Bang impatiently sets themselves apart from the crowd as the track starts with a sampler that sounds like it must have once originated for an obscure 16-bit video game track, but here it works wonderfully to set the loose shoulder-poppin’-swag ready to elevate your freaker-sneakers.

Anamege’s rap is swift with the sounds with a subject matter that reflects keenly to the twenty-somethings on the floor moving to the synth and beats. In the first voracious verse he sets out to introduces himself as a “’90s baby, it ain’t gold and shiny baby,” who is budget conscious and drives an Acura but when it’s show time, “we be limoin’.” Weed isn’t hidden but prevalent in his rap, wouldn’t be a party without the leaves, but the high state of Chiddy’s verbal genius parallels the equally trippy synthesized layers underneath the lyrics.

The past few years Chiddy Bang created for themselves an important reputation with remixes and a pair of mixtapes that stoned your mind for hours. If you were one of the rare few who had missed out on those tracks “Handclaps and Guitars” gives you a dime of what you’ve missed out on.

The new single comes from Chiddy Bang’s debut album “Breakfast” that was finally released this past week, seven months after it’s initial scheduled release date. Better late to the party than never and with “Handclaps & Guitars” you will find the song on repeat in your mind, singing, “I just want to party.”
