WWE RAW Thoughts: Settling into Expectations

After last week’s wild RAW, everything settled into its rightful place this past Monday. While this helps solidify some of the avenues that will converge at Wrestlemania 28, it doesn’t necessarily make for the most explosive television.

The show hit a plateau this week, but a necessary one. Until the RAW after the Royal Rumble, the WWE seemed to fumble with its WM28 match card. After weeks of silence, a week before the Royal Rumble, Chris Jericho said he would end the world at the event, to only lose to Sheamus. While I’m glad for Sheamus, the WWE deprived itself of the opportunity for some good television. They could have hit the lights during the final one-on-one during the Rumble. Jericho lights up his jacket and when the lights turn back on, he’s the only man in the ring. Then he goes on to face CM Punk with an air of invincibility.

Instead, Jericho hits a random Code Breaker on Punk last week and tries to deliver a ground-breaking promo this week. Some of it was good, like when he attacked each of his competitors at the Elimination Chamber PPV, calling them plagiarists. But essentially it was another way of Jericho calling the world a bunch of hypocrites.

Punk’s non-response response was perhaps the only fitting reaction at this point of the feud. This week’s RAW indicated that these two will headline WM28. For that, I am eternally grateful. And Jericho’s simple little screw-job at the end of Monday’s six-man main event was the perfect beginning to what will likely be a slow, excruciating build-up. That model applies just as well to the Triple H-Undertaker confrontation.

The Game delivered a long cut Monday saying he wont’ fight the Undertaker out of respect. After the Undertaker left last year’s WM on a stretcher, HHH said he felt sorry. We all expect this match to happen, but how? Now the Undertaker has to prove himself to HHH. These two will meet at the Big One, mark my words, but something tells me that Taker will have a run-in with the reinvigorated Kane along his way to the Cerebral Assassin.

This would have the potential to pave the way for both HHH-Taker at WM28 and give Cena a segue to build up the–ugh–“most anticipated match in WWE history.” I’m sorry I need a minute….

Sorry, the whole Cena-Rock thing got to me. But this week’s RAW, while not the most ground-breaking, successfully built a story arc that could capture the audience and carry it to Miami. Crap, now I’m thinking about The Rock again. I need to do some breathing exercises now.
