“9 Months In” Review: No Abortion Needed

Some games draw you in from the very beginning. It can be from the amazing graphics. It could be from the story line. It could be the characters. Regardless of what it is you stop playing it. “9 Months In” does just that. But it’s not for the reason you might typically think.

Yeah, the graphics are terribly outdated,  but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. For some, it might be a deal breaker. For others it can be a nice reminder of the past games played on other consoles like Nintendo.

“9 Months In”makes up for the old-school pixels with a sick story. It takes place in prison. The character, Sarah, is nine months pregnant. Your goal in the game is trying to prove she’s innocent.

This is a simple point and click title, but once again, the story makes up for the gameplay and graphical blemishes. What makes it so addicting is the characters; you are trying to figure out why they are there. You start feeling like a detective; you’ll have this thirst to figure out why people are in there and who tried to frame you. Those detective instincts will get honed eventually and if not, you’re in for a long wait. You’ll have to sit there and just try to click things till something comes up and give s you a clue for what you have to do next.

Developer Tzach Shabtay wanted this game to break from cliche and it does. The advantages in terms of plot developments and puzzle design, make it a win-win for any gamer looking for something completely different from every big name sequel on the market right now.

The voice over was a little short of convincing, but gave it a bit of humor and kept you anticipating what the characters where going to say next. Since it was a low budget game, the voice acting came from Shabtay himself as the cook and Sarah’s husband. Shabtay’s wife, Noa, played the main character, Sarah. Most of the other characters were played by his friends.

In spite of the low-budget feel and hiccups along the way, the game takes you back when playing a game was more than just graphics. Its more being into the story than anything else. You are able to pick different answers to scenarios which gives the game a touch of personality and fun. Although the voice acting could be improved, as well as the control scheme and a hint on how to interact, the game was definitely fun to play.

So much so that the faults don’t matter nearly as much as they could have otherwise.
