The Walking Dead Coverage: Phone Calls From Beyond

Although the last episode of “The Walking Dead” did not live up to expectations, it was a completely different ball game this week.

From start to finish, this episode rebounded tremendously, bringing impressive plots and story arcs that eventually converge and will play a big role as this season continues and reaches the finish line. Other than a few dull moments, there was plenty of good than bad this week, and a great sign for fans, that there were no letdowns.

We begin with Merle and Garjulo, a resident from Woodbury and one of the Governors helpers, tracking Michonne, who seems to be leaving physical messages with walker’s bodies. At first, hunting with Michonne was reminiscent to the first Rambo movie, she would pop up out of nowhere, do a little slicing and dicing with her sword and then disappear. When finally Merle decides to head back to camp, Garjulo disagrees. Unfortunately for him, Merle decides to put him down brutally.

Back at the prison, we see Rick on the phone talking to a young girl on the other end. She mentions to Rick that she is with a group of her own and that they are in a safe place. Rick pleads with her about bringing his group to her location. Unfortunately the young girl does not do so. However, she does promise Rick that he will receive a call back in a few hours.

Meanwhile in Woodbury, the Governor and Andrea get physical. However, their story line did get quite boring and repetitive at times throughout this episode. This is due to the fact that Andrea constantly changes her mind about not liking the fight from last week’s episode, then liking it again, a constant reminder of how unlikeable and simultaneously annoying character she can be.

The episode although a bit slow at first, picks up when Glenn and Maggie go for a drive and pick up some supplies. While they find more than expected especially for the baby, they run into Merle, while Michone, who is hiding from him, witnesses him capture them both and bring them back to Woodbury.

While clearing out several Walkers in the prison, Daryl makes an interesting discovery. Carol is still alive, although she is weak. She does not seem to be bit. Rick, on the other hand, receives another phone call, this time he hears Lori’s voice. While we know Rick is imagining this, it is evident that he is struggling to disconnect with the fact that she is gone, and after he hangs up the phone, he finally realizes that it is time to move on.

When Rick goes back to the group, he holds his baby girl in his arms, and brings not only comfort to the viewers by showing that he is back to his normal ways and behavior, but also to the group in terms of them not to worry about him. He does notice something odd up ahead, as he hands the baby over to Carl and walks slowly over to the prison fence. He then takes out his massive gun, remenicent to Clint Eastwood in the Dirty Harry films.

He sees a bunch of walkers, but also Michonne.

This episode was fantastic. The way the plot lines slowly come together makes it that much more exciting for what lies ahead the rest of this season. Now that Glenn and Maggie are captured in Woodbury and Merle knowing his brother is alive for sure, will cause an ultimate showdown between the Governor and his group and Rick with his.

The intensity has just picked up.
