Winning the Royal Rumble brings not just prestige, but a golden opportunity: a shot at the world title at Wrestlemania. Many of the men who have won this event either became or are destined to become legends. The 2013 Royal Rumble is impending, so here are our top five picks to win.
Wade Barrett has been on a roll. After coming back and embracing his legitimate background as a bare knuckle brawler, he has quickly rebounded, slaughtering his opponents and winning the Intercontinental championship in dominating fashion. He’d be a long shot still, but it is a possibility. The Rumble is ever so unpredictable, and surprises are abound (see Del Rio and Sheamus). Barrett would be far from the most likely to win, but he certainly would be a fresh change.
John Cena has gone over a year without the world title. This is not a bad thing, merely intriguing. He is at the point where he doesn’t need a world title to be over. He is one of WWE’s prime player to help “make†this next generation of stars. However, if he were to win at the Rumble, this position he holds could be very well utilized to help legitimize one of the world champions, on the grandest stage of them all. He could give the ultimate of rubs, no matter whom he challenges. Winning the title, again, would do little for him. But losing in a grand fashion would do wonders for both his legacy and his opponent’s career. Such a loss would be considered as the beginning of the passing of the torch.
Ryback has exploded onto the scene. He’s gone from just some big guy on NXT, to a dominating title contender. He’s still very much a raw greenhorn, who needs a lot of polish. However, it would not be entirely shocking to see him emerge victorious. It is obvious that many behind the scenes, including McMahon himself, are very high on this destructive rookie. Perhaps he’ll have a feast at the Rumble.
The Miz is awesome. A Triple Crown winner with a metric ton of mainstream connection, he is the heir apparent to overtake Cena’s position as WWE’s go-to guy to represent the company. A win at the Rumble, and the chance at another world title that comes with it, would add even more to his growing legacy. He was a credible world champion before, he can damn sure do it again. He is a prime time player who excels in the spotlight.
Brock Lesnar needs the main event. He is not one to be content with anything less. Having been absent since breaking HHH’s arm at Summerslam, a return as the final entrant at the Royal Rumble would receive an ear-shattering pop. And winning it would break the roof. Love him or hate it, he is a force to be reckoned with. He is a powerhouse with a mean streak as wide as a country mile. What he lacks in verbal charisma he more than makes up for in sheer, physical presence.
