Rise of the Guardians: Don’t Fear the Boogeyman

Do you believe in Santa Claus? How about the Sandman? Maybe even the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, or Jack Frost? If not, this movie just might change your mind. Just follow your hopes, your dreams, your wonder, and your joy. Do not fear the dark. The Guardians are protecting you.

With an all-star cast of voices, including Hugh Jackman(as the Easter Bunny), Chris Pine (as Jack Frost), Alec Baldwin (as Santa Claus), and Jude Law (as Pitch), this movie deserves a spot on the list of best films of the year. Surely it is among the best children’s films to arise in the last five years. The story follows Jack Frost on his journey to find his purpose, while at the same time defending the world, alongside the Guardians, from the dread of Fear known as Pitch, the Boogeyman. The animation of this film is absolutely gorgeous. Exquisite detail has been taken into the entire world, in order to draw the viewer in.

But that pales in comparison to the Guardians themselves. Each one has their own unique characteristics, personality, and abilities.

The movie makes brilliant use of surround sound in the theater, in order to heighten the terrifying presence of Pitch. His voice, echoing around you, hearing his laugh everywhere, brings home what he is. He is the essence of fear, devoid of any joy or hope. Darkness is his playground. Nightmares are his toy stores. Anything that is good and fun, he corrupts into terror and remorse. Standing against him are the courageous Guardians: Santa Claus, Guardian of Wonder; Tooth Fairy, Guardian of Memories; Sandman, Guardian of Dreams; Easter Bunny, Guardian of Hope; and Jack Frost, Guardian of Fun.

And people, these are not your average fairy tales. They wield weapons as well as bring joy.

The story is cliché, but in a good way. It’s the classic tale of the young hero trying to find himself. Sometimes that’s all you need. Innovation isn’t always necessary. Just get in touch with your inner child and enjoy yourself. It’s guaranteed you will go the entire movie with a big smile on your face. That is the entire purpose of this movie. It’s not meant to wow the snooty critics, nor fuel the adrenaline junkie action lovers. It is a movie about hope, and overcoming fear through the power of joy and wonder.

It’s contrived, but so? Have fun, and enjoy yourself. Don’t turn your brain off. Just let your inner child loose.
