TNA’s August 1 “surprise” was none other than MMA legend Tito Ortiz.
The question now is, can Ortiz have a bigger impact in the company than Rampage Jackson?
From just his entrance alone, the answer is an undoubtable yes.
But don’t get that excited. More than anything, Ortiz’s “return” to TNA (He served as a guest referee twice 2006) has more to do with his Bellator encounter with Jackson on Nov. 3 than anything else. That’s the real reason why he’s on Impact.
Regardless, Ortiz, a five-time UFC Champion, simply put, has presence.
That may not mean much, but in the professional wrestling world, you often hear promoters saying if stars have “it.” Ortiz looked comfortable enough on-screen that TNA could use him much more than Rampage, who has been the Tin Man thus far, minus the much-needed oil.
From the look in his eyes and the solid theme song TNA picked for him, Ortiz’s character is already light years ahead of Jackson in terms of charisma.
At 38, Ortiz still has a good 10 years of performing in his tank. An amateur wrestling champion and All-American in High School and College, Ortiz could make a decent transition to the professional wrestling world.
Chances are Ortiz will be out of the company as fast as he entered, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t the possibility for the guy to entertain.
