Hatsune Miku Project Diva F Review: Sexy Rhythm Fun

Do not let the vibrant colors and adorable vocaloid icons fool you, Hatsune Miku Project Diva F has an incredibly sharp difficulty curve and goes from a casual upbeat game to a raging mash of buttons before you even have the chance to take a bathroom break.

The game offers more than just a musical collection. It allows players the ability to dress up Miku and customize a room with her in it. If that virtual experience isn’t enough for you then you can always set an alarm in game if you don’t mind jacking up your power bill a bit. For the price of running your Playstation 3 all night you can wake up at the same time as the in game Miku though, and isn’t that ultimately worth it?

Vocaloids are individual sound bits recorded from people then pieced together to make a completely custom song. The game currently offers a selection of 44 songs of various difficulties ranging from those with an extreme lack of hand-eye coordination to someone who can either go a long period without blinking or suffers from a lack of eyelids.

The controller layout is very clever in that there is an obvious effort to include more than just button pressing without having an overwhelming amount of displays to keep up with. Along with the shapes available on the Playstation 3 controller, players must keep up with directional inputs on the D-pad and be able to flick the joysticks at a rapid pace. On the lower difficulties it is very easy to keep up and does and excellent job to wean players into the higher ratings.

When a player finds it is too easy to complete a song, they have a variety of challenges they can undertake to unlock more cool rewards in the game. Some of them aren’t so difficult, but expect to master the game when you hit a 10 star challenge and only a perfect hit on a note actually counts.

If you get tired of watching the same videos for the same songs over and over you can always take a break and try out edit mode. Project Diva F offers “Edit Mode” where players can create their own videos and import their own songs where players can edit multiple features including things such as the background and character animations and even the placement of the button input on the screen.

Overall the game is great for pretty much anyone who can appreciate music as long as the don’t mind the cutesy appearance of the Crypto Vocaloids. With multiple levels of difficulty and a variety of songs and customizations Hatsune Miku Project Diva F is an enjoyable experience. That is until you get up to challenge difficulty and find yourself stuck on one specific part. Hopefully, the upbeat synthesized voices and bright colors will keep you calm enough to smile your way through the incredible challenge that comes with upping the difficulty.

If you are already a die hard fan of the Hatsune Miku franchise then it is not anything particularly special, but for those new to the genre after its voyage across the ocean it is highly recommended for any type of gamer. The easier songs make for a great introduction into the series or even just video games in general and the later challenges are more than difficult enough for veterans of games such as Dance Dance Revolution or Guitar Hero. No matter what your skill level, as long as you have an appreciation for music Project Diva F is an fantastic game to pick up and become addicted to for hours at a time.
