Cena vs. Del Rio?

Why?

Just a month or so ago, John Cena needed elbow surgery to fix a disgusting softball-esque bruising inside of his elbow. This week on RAW, Smackdown GM announced that Cena would face World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio at Hell in a Cell.

Why?

The WWE desperately needs their Superman back.

Nothing against Del Rio, but he hasn’t been in any memorable feuds during his reign as World champ. He doesn’t have a cool catch phrase and without Ricardo Rodriguez, he doesn’t even have a cool entrance. He’s not going to put rears in seats the way Cena can.

Del Rio is simply holding the World title, merely keeping it warm for the next person to wear. Lets face it- the World title is essentially the current version of the Intercontinental title. The guys on their way up wear it to prove their ready for the WWE title and the older stars with one last run always find a way to wear it. Somewhere in between is a guy like Cena, who can put someone over and make a star out of them once he becomes champion.

The only problem is the WWE doesn’t have a clue who that is. Many think it’s Damien Sandow, but his recent string of defeats and lack of microphone time make it quite possible that he could become the first and only person to ever lose a Money in the Bank opportunity.

Stranger things have happened.

So it makes sense that they’d put their Superman in that spot, knowing he’ll sell more merchandise and make the title slightly more credible until that new face comes along.

It’s obviously the choice that’s good for business.

But just a month or so after the surgery, can Cena have a worthwhile title run? Either way, a Del Rio/Cena match helps not only legitimize the World Title and makes the company money. It can also set up an encounter between Cena and an up and comer the company can depend on moving forward.
