South Park Coverage: Enter the Ginger Cow

“Even the dumbest lie can have big consequences.”

Within the 17 seasons South Park’s been on the air, never has this show produced an episode as preposterous and nonsensical as Ginger Cow… Just kidding, they do that just about every week, and that’s exactly what makes this show so terrific.

So, there’s this red cow, and according to the Jews, Muslims, and Christians a red cow means the “beginning of the end.” However, after coming together to discuss their plan for dealing with “the end,” the three religious groups have an epiphany: for the first time in history, they are working together. So maybe, just maybe, the “beginning of the end” means the end of their three-way war.

Does any of this make sense? No. Is this the kind of story to be expected? Yes. Ginger Cow maintains South Park’s lovable absurdity and over-the-top comedy.

Creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker are not afraid to let loose. They have this bizarre way of taking an absolutely ridiculous approach for an episode and somehow manage to bring it all together to make sense. South Park is the only television show to feature Jews, Muslims and Christians partying for two straight days to their symbol of unity, Van Halen, in Jerusalem… thanks to a red cow.

Despite some good laughs and ironic twists, Ginger Cow still fails to deliver in terms of being a memorable episode. For starters, it follows the same blueprints laid out since South Park’s debut: make the first half of the episode as outrageous as possible, then find a way to bring things (almost) back to normal – a vague synopsis of practically every South Park experience. But who’s to say that is a bad thing?

Ginger Cow is for those who can handle religious bashing, fart jokes and rock legends. South Park’s crude humor is at its best in this episode, it’s probably a good idea to dive in with an open mind, otherwise you’re in for a dreadful experience.
