Star Wars: Rebel Heist #1 Review: Nothing to Scream About

“Star Wars: Episode VII” has been announced to much fanfare and controversy. As usual, “Star Wars” comics are still coming out with the newest one, “Star Wars: Rebel Heist” by Matt Kindt getting released as well. Slated as one of the last “Star Wars” comics, this one does not disappoint- it’s just like other poorly done “Expanded Universe” stories.

Han Solo meets up with Jan, a nobody who wants to try to join the Rebels on the planet Corellia. They get attacked by the Empire and hightail it out of there. In fact, this whole attack was part of the Rebel’s plan.

The story doesn’t seem to go anywhere. The whole plan, once you see all of it, makes the reader say” so, what was the whole point of that?” It seems unlike anything the Rebels would do. It is way too reckless, has no point and it is doomed to absolute failure.

At least Solo’s character is well interpreted here. He is snarky, calls Jan “Kid” and does things that’ll make anybody swoon over him. Going into a seedy bar and blasting people is exactly what he’d do. You can even imagine Harrison Ford actually doing it in a new movie.

The One major problem with the Story is Jan. He’s not so much a character as a narrator. He literally does nothing in the story. Solo does everything while Jan narrates. If Kindt does a story rewrite and take out Jan the story will remain the same. It would also be much more interesting because tons of people love Han Solo. There should be more stories with him doing missions alone.

The art is a mixed bag. Some of the character models (Han Solo) look marvelous while others look ugly. They have these deformed faces that don’t look all that humanoid. Yes, some of the characters are aliens, but they have human like faces and don’t look good at all. Not to mention the first time we see the bar. At the entrance these tentacles come out and do…something to Jan. Inside the bar we see a tentacle alien and what looks like a facehugger. It looks very out of place in the “Star Wars” universe.

“Star Wars: Rebel Heist” may be one of the last “Star Wars” comics, but it won’t be remembered. It has a pointless story, a throwaway character and mediocre art. This one needs to be thrown into the sarlacc pit.
