Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Nick Coyle, who discusses his new album, “Sound Makes Waves.†Coyle also discusses his departure from Stardog Champion and upcoming projects.
A veteran of the music industry for years, the talented and multi-faceted Coyle’s music has been featured on a wide variety of media outlets including ESPN, FOX, NBC, MTV, VH1, SIRIUS, and even EA Sport’s NHL game franchise.
Review Fix: When we spoke last summer, you were the frontman for Stardog Champion. What has happened since then?
Nick Coyle: Well we did a small tour and then I realized that my heart just wasn’t into that style of music anymore. Â There were also a lot of bad business decisions that were made. Â It was time for me to move on.
Review Fix: What are your hopes for this album?
Coyle: Really it’s to show my fans and the rest of the world where my head is really at. Â To show everyone that I’m not just a lead singer of a rock band. Â I wrote, played, recorded, and mixed the whole thing myself in my studio. Â I even did the artwork.
Review Fix: How is your creative process different when you work as a solo artist?
Coyle: When you’re part of a band it’s more about pleasing everyone.  Which is almost impossible.  As a solo artist, it’s  straight from my heart and mind. I just get to be me.  I don’t have to care about what anyone else thinks.  It’s actually quite therapeutic.
Review Fix: Why do you think people refer to your vocal work as unique?
Coyle: I think I have I wide range of things I can do with my voice. Â Where sometimes others can be very one dimensional. Â I always approach it on a song to song basis. Â I write the melodies and lyrics to fit the mood of the song.
Review Fix: What do you think you have to do to get to the next level in your music career?
Coyle: It’s really about just being myself. Â Honesty goes a long way.
Review Fix: What do you think is holding you back?
Coyle: Nothing…I do music everyday at some level. Â I perform at least 10 times a month, I also started doing music for film stuff. Â making enough money to have a nice home and support my family. Â I haven’t worked a “real” job since 1999. Â So I would say I’m winning. Â I don’t need to be a superstar to be successful. Â I’m a working musician.
Review Fix: What song is most indicative of your solo work? What song do you believe stands out the most?
Coyle: It’s hard for me to pick….the album as a whole paints a bigger picture of who I am.
Review Fix: What do the next few months look like for you?
Coyle: Busy. Playing shows, writing for some film stuff, and I’m actually launching a new band, Electric Eyes. Â Which I already written about 20 songs for.
