Review Fix chats with The Howling Tongues’ guitarsist Nick Magliochetti who discusses the band’s inspiration and creative process behind their new self-titled album. Magliochetti also discusses what it was like to work with music veteran Tom Tapley and the band’s plans for the future.
Review Fix: What was the inspiration for the album?
Nick Magliochetti: We’ve been a band for over three years and really wanted to release a full-length album. We wanted to track and mix the album completely to analog tape. A lot of our favorite albums were done that way and we wanted to see if we could do it. Sonically it inspired us, and that’s how we want to do all of our albums.
Review Fix: What song do you think provides listeners with the best example of what the band is capable of?
Magliochetti: All of the songs on the album have a different dynamic to them. Definitely check out our single “Gotta Be A Man†to hear a bit of what we’re capable of.
Review Fix: What was it like to work with Tom Tapley?
Magliochetti: We’ve been blessed to work with some amazing individuals on the production side of things. Tom has a really great ear when it comes to finding those aggressive tones that we’re looking for. We worked with Tom on our EP called “Keep The Dust Downâ€. We got the chance to work with Stan Lynch and Billy Chapin on our full-length and that was amazing working with those guys. They’re extremely musically minded. We’ve learned a lot about recording, producing, and engineering from Tom, Stan and Billy.
Review Fix: What song do you think people may originally pass on, but redeems itself or grows on you with multiple listens?
Magliochetti: “What’s It Gonna Take†is a slower song on our album so people may pass on it the first time they listen, but we’ve been getting a great response from fans about that song. It’s one of our favorites to play live because we go into this epic jam at the end of the song and everything gets crazy.
Review Fix: What’s the band’s creative process like?
Magliochetti: We rehearse and write in the attic of our drummer’s barn. We set up a little recording studio up there. Someone brings an idea to a writing session and we work on it together in our rehearsal studio space until it forms into something we can eventually lay down to tape. We record just about everything that we do in the attic of the barn. We just released this album and we’re pretty close to finishing the demos of the next one.
Review Fix: How do you want this album to affect people?
Magliochetti: We want people to hear it and think that it’s an honest rock’n’roll record. We did it to tape and with mostly live takes to capture ‘the burn’ as Stan likes to call it. We want people to become fans of our music, but we also want them to fall in love with rock’n’roll again. Maybe inspire them to discover some other bands or rediscover that album they listened to religiously in their teens. We want people to know that we’re going to be around for a while putting out records.
Review Fix: What do you think is the band’s most marketable quality?
Magliochetti: Standing out. Rock’n’roll’s essence is always going against the grain. Nowadays people can make a record on a laptop and we chose to do one to tape. Being a rock’n’roll band in a world consumed with EDM and Indie Pop music helps us stand out. We put a lot of emphasis in the live show aspect of our band and just write and play music that we love.
Review Fix: Review Fix: What are your hopes and goals for the rest of the year?
Magliochetti: Our goals for the rest of the year are to finish writing and recording the next album and to expand our touring of the US. We want to visit new cities and meet new people by playing our music in venues and at festivals. Come hang and pick up a vinyl.
