The Death-Defying Dr. Mirage #1 Preview: Interesting Enough

Ghosts and mediums go together like steak and potatoes. It’s been that way for what seems like forever. This seems to be the case in Valiant’s new series “The Death-Defying Dr. Mirage.” However, the preview for the first issue leaves much to be desired.

The preview doesn’t tell much about the story. We meet a character named Shan, who seems to be some kind of medium. It’s not all that clear. She decides to help a woman whose husband died and is depressed.

The story is not all that clear on all the details. That could be expected since previews aren’t supposed to tell that much of the plot. However, there is such a thing as telling too little. This preview does not do a good job of telling the basic story line, nor does it create any buzz for the comic.

That’s a pity because stories like this are usually interesting and can go many ways. Look at “Black Jack” by Osamu Tezuka. It’s about a brilliant unlicensed surgeon who successfully performs super complicated surgeries for the right price. It sounds mundane but is actually brilliant.

If this comic can pull off taking something mundane and make it out of this world then it would be a success.

The art is also hard to comprehend. On one hand, it does not look like many comics out there. On the other hand it looks a little too unpolished. The art may improve come later issues, but right now it’s underwhelming.

”The Death-Defying Dr. Mirage” looks like it could be interesting but right now it’s uncertain. With an original looking art that needs some improving it’s too early to say if this series is worth reading.
