Better Call Saul: Episode Commentary: “UNO”

The premiere episode of “Better Call Saul” was spectacular in many ways. The black and white flash forward makes this sort of a little brother to “Breaking Bad,” rather than a cheesy spinoff.

Regardless, “Uno” does have several elements that resemble “Breaking Bad.” For instance the start of the episode is a flash forward that shows Saul Goodman with a mustache working at a Cinnabon in a Nebraska mall. As he heads to his lonely apartment he slips in a VHS tape of his old Saul Goodman promos.

“UNO” then cuts to 2002 where Jimmy McGill played by the hilarious Bob Odenkirk (“Breaking Bad”) who is Saul Goodman before Saul Goodman, a lawyer who is trying to make ends meet. He prepares his closing statement while he’s on recess in the court’s restroom; and is defending three bonehead students who are caught on video having sex with a dead corpse. The comic relief and disturbing feeling quickly sets in.
