Six quick matches and a smidgen of storyline development made for a lackluster episode of NXT this past week, but Samoa Joe’s debut and the promise of a match between Joe and Owens made for some promising moments in the future.
Check out this week’s NXT Power Rankings to see who’s hungry for Kevin Owns’ NXT title.
Honorable Mention: Zack Ryder and Mojo Rawley: These guys are actually a pretty compatible team and can use each other to get to very different places. For Rawley, it’s all about getting a concrete spot on NXT, while Ryder, much like Tyson Kidd before him, would love to get back to the main roster and stay there.
5: Emma: Easily one of the most talented workers in the NXT and WWE Divas divisions, Emma’s win over Blue Pants doesn’t prove much, as this was a match she should have won. Regardless, her new look and attitude are much-needed ones for her career moving forward.
4: Tyler Breeze: A win over Bull Dempsey did nothing for him this week, but he’s still, as always, in the hunt for the NXT title. The question remains if he’ll ever get a real opportunity for the belt, especially with so many other stars ahead of him in the pecking order.
3: Baron Corbin: His win over Angelo Dawkins was a departure for him as it was more than just a five-second match. Trying to expand his repertoire of moves, Corbin continues to be an impressive work in progress.
2: Samoa Joe: An impressive debut for Joe, but one that should have been saved for a bigger event. Regardless, he’s a prime contender to get the NXT title once Owens moves on to the main roster.
1: Kevin Owens: He wasn’t on the show, but he’s the NXT Champion and he defended his title against Adrian Neville on RAW and is in the middle of a feud with John Cena, with Finn Balor and Samoa Joe looming. Talk about having your plate full.
