Shady figures kidnapping random people makes headlines because it’s downright scary and instills fear into people. A dollop of the mundane is more than enough to take this story and flush it down the toilet. “King Tiger #1†by Randy Stradley with art by Douglas Wheatley is one of those stories that could do with a bit more shock factor.
A mysterious group is kidnapping random people. Meanwhile, Milo has just started as an assistant to a martial artist/magic user named Tiger. Soon Tiger is called into action to rescue the kidnaped people.
The mysterious group kidnapping random people is an interesting plot that can go in multiple ways. It’s too bad most of the comic is spent on the characters sitting around showing Milo the ropes. The story comes across as an episode of some sitcom where nothing funny happens.
It does introduce the characters, though. We do get a little background though it is a paltry amount. There is one scene where we get some background information on Tiger while they are on their way to the mission. It’s awkward and feels like it was put in there because there was nowhere else to put it. This also does not make the characters any more interesting than what we’re expecting. They just come across as dull with barely enough reason given to care about them.
The artwork is decent. It has some nice character models, but the overall design of everything does not catch the eye. The colors do work well with the tone of the comic, which means they’re drab and uninviting. Overall, it’s a pretty bland looking comic.
“King Tiger†has some nice ideas, but the first volume leaves much to be desired. With a fairly boring sitcom like events and boring art, this comic has a lot to make up for in its next three issues.
