Inside Rise: Battle Lines

National Video Games Examiner Patrick Hickey Jr. chats with Jeremy Hogan, Director at The Secret Games Company about the developer’s newest game, “Rise: Battle Lines.” Discussing the inspiration behind the game and, of course, the epic music by Murugan Thiruchelvam, Hogan, a lifelong fan of strategy games, lets us know why this one matters.

Rise: Battle Lines is a quick and accessible multiplayer battle game that delivers meaty strategy in a bite-size format. Draft an army and fight a battle all in 15 thrilling minutes. Opponents issue orders at the same time using a unique system of simultaneous turn-based tactics. The rules are simple, but the strategies require the brains, bravery and sheer bravado of a general, destined to Rise!

Patrick Hickey Jr.: What has the development process been like?

Jeremy Hogan: In a word: Fun. Rise: Battle Lines began as a passion project for a group of us, who met working together at a London studio. We discussed it over bowls of steaming hot noodle soup at lunch and played paper prototypes in the pub after work. That was a few years ago now and our game has evolved with us. The team has grown and we’ve had the time to iterate and focus in on exactly what sort of game we want to make.

He also stars in Ziggurat Interactive’s World Championship Boxing Manager 2, where he performs the VO of nearly every male character in the game. He also worked on the Atari VCS’s BPM Boy.
