Review Fix chats with VIDA frontman Joshua Cisneros, who discusses the band’s last single, “Diamonds†and their goals for the future. With a fresh sound and rich influences, the group has a plethora of potential.
Review Fix: How is VIDA different?
Joshua Cisneros: In an industry that’s so saturated with music about sex and drugs we find ourselves playing music that hopefully has more substance than that. We want to show people that there is more to life than just money. We aren’t afraid to talk about certain subjects that the pop industry sometimes tries to avoid. I think that makes us who we are.
Review Fix: What was your creative process like?
Cisneros: I would say my process for writing usually starts the same but varies with every song. It starts with me, a guitar, and something I want to say. I typically have a phrase that I want to use or a melody I think would be nice before I start. From there it can go so many ways. Sometimes I write a song in an hour. Sometimes I have a song for years and one day the right words just come to me. Sure you can write a whatever song but when you have that one idea that you know is going to relate to someone I think that’s when I get most excited about writing.
Review Fix: What bands have influenced you the most?
Cisneros: For me definitely my biggest influence is One Republic. Ryan Tedder is able to write songs that really relate to people. He has a slightly churchy feel in some of his songs that is a perfect blend of gospel and what’s current. I think taking those elements and fusing them with who I am as a person really influences the sound of VIDA.
Review Fix: How was “Diamonds” written? Is there a story behind it?
Cisneros: “Diamonds” is actually an amalgamation of a couple of relationships I’ve been in. It’s a story about dating someone who’s put up these barriers in their life. It’s a plea begging them to let you in even though it might be tough for that person.
Review Fix: What’s the LA music scene like? How do you think it influences your sound?
Cisneros: I think just growing up so close to LA you automatically get influenced even if you don’t know it. I think its allowed us to pull from all kinds of different influences sonically and no just be suck in one genre or train of thought. It’s definitely helped us continue to push the boundaries of what we can do.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Cisneros: We are looking to release our new single very soon along with our new EP! We got a couple more thing in the works that more on the secretive side but we look forward to sharing it with you everyone very soon.
