Review Fix Exclusive Tribeca Film Festival Coverage: Electra Woman & Dyna Girl Review: Fun

Digital media is evolving day-by-day. No one person consumes media the same way and the content itself has grown and “Electra Woman and Dyna Girl” is a prime example of this growth.

Starring two of Youtube’s brightest stars, Grace Helbig and Hannah Hart who play Electra Woman and Dyna Girl respectively, “Electra Woman and Dyna Girl’s” first four parts are a fun meld of comedy, light-heartedness and action that makes for an exciting web series.

A remake of the 1976 TV series of the same name, “Electra Woman and Dyna Girl” follows two low-level Ohio superheroes in a post-super villain world. In this “Tick”-esque universe, superheroes are celebrities that enjoy lucrative endorsement deals and attend conventions.

Contextually it works because of its two leads, whose chemistry and quick quips make every second enjoyable. Helbig and Hart’s Electra Woman and Dyna Girl are just two women trying to navigate this strange world of superheroes that gets even stranger when they go viral after halting a robbery at their local convenience store.

The way these two bounce jokes off each other as their relationship is put to test once they have to deal with the complexities of celebrity makes this remake work – it is a universal story about two friends being pulled apart by the changing world around them and keeping your integrity as you star rises. Something the two Youtubers can relate being that their profile continues to grow.

Outside of Helbig and Hart, the cast plays well in this world especially Andy Buckley (“The Office”) who plays agent to the superheroes Dan Dixon. Stepping out of his element to play a narcissistic supped-up Ari Gold, Buckley commands the screen every time Dixon comes onto the screen.

Chris Marrs Piliero, who has directed music videos for Ariana Grande and Britney Spears, directs the series and delivers a series that is one part “Cooties” and one part “Super,” it is satirical but has deeply imbedded darkness to it – not like “Batman v Superman” dark, however, it you jump out of your seat when you see Hart rip a burglar’s arm clean off with a DIY gadget.

Piliero is able to give the series a feature look and juggle the multiple tones without sacrificing the message.

It may not blow you away with its action, it makes up for that in heart — “Electra Woman and Dyna Girl” is a delightful take on the superhero genre that is propelled by its two young stars and direction.

“Electra Woman and Dyna Girl” launches on Fullscreen April 26 and other digital platforms on June 7.
