When Tennant Met Smith

On a beautiful day in Times Square, a place where the world meets to marvel at the lights of the big apple and tourists get charged $20 for a photo with a dude in a cheap Spider-Man costume, there was something particularly magical happening in the PlayStation Theater – no, not a Beyonce concert.

For the first time, David Tennant and Matt Smith of the seminal BBC series “Doctor Who” appeared at a public event together at Wizard World NYC – The Doctors.

Tennant and Smith, who played the tenth and eleventh incarnations of the titular character, dished out autographs, took photos and held an interactive Q & A for those in attendance.

The line wrapped around the theater like an anaconda as fans nervously waited for their turn to meet the performers that portrayed the iconic role of the Doctor – a particularly diverse crowd that speaks to the reach of this series that has touched science fiction fans across the globe.

“It’s such an odd, wonderful thing to be a part of and be at the center of,” said Tennant during the Q & A. “There’s nothing really like it.”

That uniqueness was on full display as you can see the glee on kids’ faces as their smiles stretched from ear to ear after getting autographs from the actors – it’ll be like searching for the lost city of Atlantis to find a piece of sci-fi that has traveled across the pond that has that kind of profound effect on children.

“There’s a huge sense of responsibility with,” said Smith when discussing the weight of the role.

A responsibility both actors take seriously – watching the two interact with fans you can see the role of the Doctor is not something that ends when the camera stops rolling, the legacy is continued off screen.

Tennant and Smith like their portrayals of the iconic Doctor have an indispensable charm that commanded the fans in the crowd answering questions like “Star Wars or Star Trek?” and burning New York ones like “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Ghostbusters?”

This event like many of Wizard World’s across the country is for one thing and one thing only: The fans.

“Our fans have been clamoring to see David Tennant and Matt Smith, two of our most popular guests, together, and Wizard World is proud to have brought them to this unique event,” said John Macaluso , Wizard World CEO in a press release regarding the event. “Wizard World NYC—The Doctors is a significant addition to our schedule of pop culture and gaming conventions that will be one of the highlights of an exciting year.”
