Review Fix: What makes this comic special?
Kate Leth: Girl Over Paris is a bit like a daydream – circuses, magic, romance, ghosts, danger – all brought to life by Ming Doyle and Andrew Dalhouse, an absolutely flawless art team. I think if you have any interest in the supernatural or the angst of teenage love, it’s got something for you. Honestly, I sometimes have reservations about my work after I see the words on the page, but I love this book completely. I think we really have made something special.
Review Fix: What fuels your creative process?
Leth: LaCroix, Spotify playlists, videos of Cirque du Soleil, my boyfriend, my cat, McElroy podcasts, licorice and Parks and Recreation episodes.
Review Fix: What comics have inspired you over the years? Why?
Leth: Thousands of them! Some I thought about while working on this book were Locke and Key, This One Summer, Anya’s Ghost and Death: The High Cost of Living.
Review Fix: What was it like to work with Ming Doyle?
Leth: A dream come true. When you’re a fan of someone and then you get to see their pages in your inbox every few days, adapting your words? There’s no feeling like that. Ming’s art is so beautiful, so delicate and thoughtful, I can’t imagine anyone else tackling this story with me. Combined with our colourist, Andrew Dalhouse, whose moody tones and sparkling backgrounds keep the whole thing feeling very enchanted, it brings the story to life.
Review Fix: Bottom line, why should someone read this?
Leth: Because it’s great! Like I said above, I think it has a little something for everybody. You don’t have to have read Gwenda’s books in order to pick up the comic, although I think you should, so don’t worry about having to do research. We catch you up quickly in issue one and get the story rolling.
Review Fix: How do you want it to be remembered?
Leth: Maybe as someone’s first comic book, if they come from the world of YA novels. I’d love that, and hope it delights them enough that they check out other books, too. All told, I hope people find it as charming and exciting as I have working on it.
