Review Fix Exclusive: DW Waterson Talks Season Three of ‘That’s My DJ’

Review Fix chats with DW Waterson who discusses the third season of the web series “That’s My DJ.”

About That’s My DJ:

From heartbeat to heartbreak, chasing dreams and chasing highs, THAT’S MY DJ is an unapologetic look inside the new order of rave. Following the success of the first season, season two focuses on a sexually charged narrative between two women in Toronto’s music scene. Jaded by her experiences of disposable love in the fast paced electronic club scene, the series follows Meagan played by Emily Piggford (HEMLOCK GROVE, THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE) as she decides to take control of her passion and throws herself into the wild world of music promotion. Interning at a downtown recording studio, Meagan pairs up with her co-worker Sam played by Jade Hassoune (SHADOWNHUNTERS, HEARTLAND) an up and coming music producer to start the weekly party, Home Brew. The show advances when Meagan meets Hannah played by Dayle McLeod (THE L.A. COMPLEX), a powerhouse DJ who completely derails her with their intoxicating chemistry. THAT’S MY DJ also stars Kristian Bruun (ORPHAN BLACK, MURDOCH MYSTERIES), Kelly McCormack (11.22.63, BARN WEDDING) and Nico Racicot (DEGRASSI).

Review Fix: For those unaware, what makes the rave scene different?

DW Waterson: The rave scene is definitely like a family, a community of creatives who all come together on the dance floor under the neon lights. I would definitely compare it to a modern day woodstock but with blustering bassy beats.

Review Fix: What did you learn from season one?

Waterson: After season one I really learned how to assemble a stronger team. When you know everyone is hustling, passionate and insanely committed to the project you become this unstoppable force that can solve any problem.

Review Fix: What makes this show special?

Waterson: Stylistically and aesthetically ’That’s My DJ’ really explores the honest truth of what it’s like to live Toronto’s electronic music scene in a really cinematic way. It’s a unique POV that I haven’t seen yet in other web series or TV.

Review Fix: What is it like to work with Emily Piggford?

Waterson: She’s a DREAM! One of the most talented, hard-working and loving people I have ever met in my life. Beyond the fact that we’ve become very close friends since season one, shooting season two we pushed each other creatively making us both stronger artists.

Review Fix: Without giving anything away, what should fans expect in season two?

Waterson: You know that lightning bolt moment when you see someone and you know your lives are about to blow up because of it? It’s that plus lasers, parties and dope ass beats.

Review Fix: Is it fun to inject your own music into the show?

Waterson: Duh! Getting to give my own show it’s heartbeat was such a rad experience.

Review Fix: How do you want this series to be remembered?

Waterson: I want people to look back and say “Yeah that’s just like my life. That’s everything I felt in my 20s. The love, the pain, the confusion, the drugs, the parties, the highs, the lows.”

Review Fix: What are your goals for this season?

Waterson: My goal this season is to get people more connected with the show, build an audience and start a real conversation about the themes explored in season two. It’s all about connection baby!

Review Fix: What’s next?

Waterson: Season 3 of That’s My DJ. We dive into the world of being a producer with Sam at the helm starring Jade Hassouné. We’ve already shot the season and are currently in post-production so stay tuned!
