Review Fix: Why do you think The Golden Girls have continued to endure for so long?
Jonathan Rockefeller: There’s something more than special that enables a show to last on television for more than 30 years. From its inception, The Golden Girls was an alternative to the other characters on television at that time, and it was incredibly insightful to have women of a certain age with universal stories that touch us all. The show pushed boundaries by talking about issues that touched everyone –aging, sex, and all sorts of taboo subjects – but all was discussed meaningfully among a group of exceptionally strong women and friends.
Review Fix: What makes this show special?
Rockefeller: The show has endeared itself because of well-written scripts, played by four tremendously and gifted actors. Each week could be slapstick, insulting or a re-hash old vaudevillian jokes; all the while being rooted in essence of the characters and the writers.
Review Fix: What makes the puppets the best way to tell this story?
Rockefeller: There is no way to do true justice to the four wonderful performers who played the characters on the show – especially with a show that is so ingrained in American culture. Puppets provide a heightened sense of reality, and encourages the imagination of the audience. Puppets also allow us to exaggerate the traits and nuances of the characters. Our show is a parody, and while I know everyone will have a strong sense of nostalgia in recalling the brilliance of the television show – our aim is to make the audience laugh while we make light of the situational and recurring aspects of the original show.
Review Fix: What are your goals for the production?
Rockefeller: We want to bring laughs – lots of laughs, but underneath is the type of show that brings people together. The Golden Girls is innately about friendship and working through life’s problems together. There is a great sense of community within an audience, when everyone can laugh and celebrate a show together.
Review Fix: Who will enjoy it the most?
Rockefeller: Devoted fans will certainly get a few more hidden references than others, but this show is for anyone with a genuine sense of humor and fun.
Review Fix: Bottom line, why should someone check it out?
Rockefeller: It’s the Golden Girls with Puppets, and is written and performed to appeal to all ‘girls, gays and grannies’ and more! I think that just about says it all.
