Psycho Pass: Inspector Shinya Kogami Volume 1 Review: Solid But Not As Good as the Anime

“Psycho-Pass” is one of the most popular anime “Production IG” has made in recent years. It is so successful that many sequels and prequels have been made to appease fans. One of them is “Psycho-Pass: Inspector Shinya Kogami” Dark Horse has released the first volume and it’s more of a “for fans” thing.

Shinya Kogami is considered a legend in the world of “Psycho-Pass.” In this manga, we see him in his early days as he tackles missing corpses, marked organs and plenty of futuristic crimes. We also meet some of his cohorts and how they were like and how they helped him in his investigations.

While the prequel does give you a sense of what kind of world this is, there is still a lot kept out for newer readers. This is a case of “must have watched to anime to understand” instances.

That’s not to say it’s a miss. Fans will love to see what Kogami did and his cases are interesting in their own right. These cases may not be as interesting as those in the anime, bit fans will enjoy what’s going on fine.

The artwork looks exactly like the anime. This is a plus for fans, but in reality, the devil is in the details. The anime has a lot of style and many scenes look like they are better off in an anime than in manga form. Color is another thing that makes the anime. Since manga is black and white, whatever magic the anime’s style had is gone here.

Volume one of “Psycho-Pass: Inspector Shinya Kogami” offers fans a ton to like but newer fans are better off watching the anime before reading this. While the art style is true to the anime, a story like this requires movement and color to make any kind of impact in its storytelling.
