Review Fix Exclusive: David Stücken Talks ‘An Epitaph For Love’

Review Fix chats with David and the Curse frontman David Stücken, who discusses the bands debut album, “An Epitaph For Love.”

About David and the Curse:

Singer-songwriter-guitarist–producer David Stücken is the force behind LA-based rock band David and The Curse whose dynamic debut An Epitaph For Love is due out early 2017. David wrote and produced the autobiographical album of gritty rock tales told through the lens of an anti-hero. A prolific songwriter, David writes earnestly with his electric guitar, painting pictures of personal battles and tales from the darkest corners of LA to the brightest lights of the downtown skyline.

Review Fix: How did David and The Curse get together?

David Stücken: My journey down the musical highway started professionally some 10 odd years ago. Through three different bands I’ve built a strong “rolodex” if you will of musicians I’ve met along the way and wanted to start a “solo” project that still incorporated other musicians but also would fulfill my artistic and sonic desires. I wanted to create a new sound than I was ever able to do in my previous projects so that is why and how David and The Curse began.

Review Fix: What was your creative process working on your debut album An Epitaph For Love – due out early 2017?

Stücken: The recording process spanned out over a few different sessions and the songs were written at different times in my life. Some of the songs were written a few years ago and some were written the day before hey were recorded. Though the LP is only 10 songs we recorded 27 during the recording process and refined and defined down the 10 that most well fit together cohesively.

Review Fix: What is your favorite song on the album? What’s the story behind it? How was it written?

Stücken: I don’t have one favorite song on the album. My favorite lyrics though are “Figueroa Street” because of the descriptive lyrics about the division in wealth in the city of Los Angeles. The song was written a few years ago when I lived about a block off of Figueroa Street in downtown LA and the song was written through  my eyes as I saw the world.

Review Fix: Why did you pick “She Loves The  Night” as the first single?

Stücken: Sonically the song is hard hitting and the lyrics are somewhat party anthem oriented while still having a dark undertone of truth. The song is about a dangerous femme fatale and the lifestyle that comes along with indulgence.

Review Fix: What makes An Epitaph For Love a special album?

Stücken: For me the most important aspect of an album is the songwriting and I believe this is my best songwriting to date. So the writing.

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Stücken: I want people to identify with the lyrics as I do with my favorite artists. Or… I just want people to dance and sing or do whatever they do to the music they love. Art is made to be enjoyed. Through happiness and through pain.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2017?

Stücken: To work as much as possible.

Review Fix: What’s next for David and The Curse?

Stücken: “She Loves The Night” is available at digital retailers. We want to play as many shows as possible. Would be really happy to play in Europe sooner than later.

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Stücken: Thank you to everyone who listens to the music and supports the band in one way or another, even if it’s just streaming the song and playing it for their friends.
