Hi Lo Ha’s Ain’t Gone Tonight EP Review: Lightning in a Bottle

The San Francisco indie rock band Hi Lo Ha’s third EP Ain’t Gone Tonight takes its listener on a journey of relaxation, bliss and satisfaction across the genre of indie-pop, alternative rock and even alternative country. It’s an album that is worth listening to as its vocals and music put its audience in a state of easy listening and pleasure.

Cold Weather Clothes is the first song of the EP and it prepares you for what is up next. Its captivating music of bliss, it calming vocals and the lyrics of reassurance are meant to put the audience in a state of peace. Granted, the song is six minutes long and it might be a turn off for some, but it with calming vocals and memorizing music, it does its job just right to get listeners nice and calm.

The second and third track, Come Down and Guest List, are not like the other songs on the EP, as they aren’t upbeat and fast-paced but rather slow downed and have a darker undertone to their lyrics. However, with its great melody and vocals, you are captured by the essences of the two tracks.

Radio is the most energized and vibrant tack of the EP and it is sure to leave a smile on your face by the end of the song. With its upbeat music, lyrics of nostalgia and a mesmerizing guitar riff, this is one song you will want to hear on the radio.

Thinking ‘Bout a Friend is a bit of a dark horse in the EP compared to the rest of the tracks. While the rest of the tracks tend to be in the genres of indie-pop or alternative rock, Thinking ‘Bout a Friend goes straight into the territory of alternative/folk. Starting with a cheery piano piece that follows the song throughout and a shredding guitar segment near the end, the track is a banger through and through.

Following Thinking ‘Bout a Friend, come bonus tracks which are instrumentals versions of Cold Weathered Clothes, Come Down and Thinkin’ ‘Bout a Friend, so if you weren’t a fan of the lyrics, but are of the music, then you are sure to love these bonus tracks.

Ain’t Gone Tonight is not an EP that is meant to get anyone excited or pumped but rather to ease their mind. With Ben Reisdorph’s lead vocals and guitar strums, Brian Davis’s bass playing skill, Willie Rusert’s keyboards along with James Fisher’s drums beats, each of the musicians’ input has created an album that truly is lightning in a bottle.
