Review Fix chats with Texas four-piece Autumn Walker, Lodin Fortenberry, guitarist Cameron Barber, Drummer Dan Flynn and Bassist Mitchell Meitler to find out how the band was formed, their creative process and goals for the future.
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Lodin: We’ve all been involved with music from a pretty young age.
Review Fix: How did the band get together?
Lodin: Cameron and I have played in bands together for a while but we weren’t doing anything serious at the time. We had a mutual friend who introduced us to Dan and we started jamming, writing, recording and it turned into something more.
Review Fix: What are your influences?
Lodin: Anything from Pavement to Rancid to Alt Country.
Review Fix: What is your stand-out track on this album? How was it written?
Dan: Definitely one of our most stand out tracks is a song called “Barking at the Buddha”. It was written experimentally as an electronic demo song but quickly developed into something that we didn’t expect.
Review Fix: What makes your brand of music special?
Cameron: We feel like we branch out to a wide audience who are fans of rock and roll.
Review Fix: How was “Step Back†written?
Lodin: I wrote it in my RV which was located in the middle of the woods one night and we all just kind of built on it. It’s really a reminder to stop and smell the roses. A realization that everything you might long for or want is already here in front of you.
Review Fix: Why do you think people should enjoy it?
Dan: It’s a rhythmic and anthemic song with a nonchalant positive message. It’s just an overall chill song.
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Mitchell: We just want people to enjoy the music and hopefully get something out of it that made them think in a different way.
Review Fix: What makes this album different from your previous work?
Dan: We took way more time on really shaping these songs and getting them to be the best they could. Conversations EP were the first songs that we played together. It was also one of the first records recorded at Firefly Sound Studio. Our band and Firefly was very young. Conversations EP began with Lodin and Cameron reconnecting and writing music together again after not hanging out for a short while.
Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of 2018?
Mitchell: Play a lot shows, write a lot of songs, make a lot of friends and kick a lot of ass.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Dan: Releasing the rest of the record, more music videos and more shows!
Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?
Lodin: At the end of the day, we just want to play music together.
